USDA LAUNCHES WEANED CALF RISK PROTECTION PROGRAM FOR COW-CALF PRODUCERS
The U . S . Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) Risk Management Agency ( RMA ) has launched a new insurance option for cow-calf producers in four states designed to protect the profitability of their spring calving . While producers currently have access to insurance options like Livestock Risk Protection ( that provides coverage against market declines ) and Pasture , Rangeland , and Forage ( that protects against poor grazing conditions ) this new Weaned Calf Risk Protection pilot program , could help ensure that producers ’ hard work during calving pays off down the road .
“ There are many variables and pressures involved in running a cow-calf operation , making it even more important ranchers have a variety of insurance options available similar to the wide range of options available to crop growers ,” said RMA Administrator Marcia Bunger in a statement announcing the program . “ The introduction of Weaned Calf Risk Protection reflects our priority to always pay attention to the evolving needs of producers and create options that can meet their unique situation .”
Weaned Calf Risk Protection insures producers against their calves declining in price due to decreased weaning weight caused by drought , excessive moisture , hail , wind , frost , insects and disease . With much of the U . S . facing environmental challenges like drought , hard winters , or flooding , this insurance program provides another way for cattle producers to manage risk .
