USDA LAUNCHES WEANED CALF RISK PROTECTION PROGRAM FOR COW-CALF PRODUCERS

Continued from page 1
“ Raising cattle can be a volatile business , but risk management tools like Weaned Calf Risk Protection can help producers protect themselves from declines in the market caused by disasters ,” said NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Allison Rivera . “ NCBA has worked on and supported these types of risk management programs , and we will continue pushing for strengthened risk management options in the next Farm Bill .”
According to USDA , the insurance program will be available in Colorado , Nebraska , South Dakota and Texas beginning in January 2024 . Insurance sales close Jan . 31 , 2024 , for the 2024 crop year . Coverage levels between 50 % and 85 % will be available along with catastrophic coverage .
“ Risk management programs can be extremely helpful to protect your operation from unexpected downturns in the market or extreme weather events ,” said NCBA President Todd Wilkinson , a South Dakota cattle producer . “ As with any risk management program , I encourage you to consider whether this type of tool has a role in your operation . Effective risk management can help make sure that our farms and ranches stay in business for the long-term .”
This insurance program , like similar crop insurance programs , is sold and delivered through private crop insurance agents . For a list of insurance agents , please contact your local USDA Service Center or visit the RMA website at rma . usda . gov .
