The biggest threat we face during these seasons is not the work itself— it’ s the“ noise.” Noise is the self-doubt that creeps in at 2:00 a. m., the distractions that pull us away from our primary mission, and the exhaustion that makes us mistake a temporary struggle for a permanent state of being.
To move from survival mode to a growth mindset, we have to cut through that noise with three tactical steps:
1. Identify the Primary Mission: When everything is urgent, nothing is important. What is the one thing that must happen today to keep the ranch or the family moving? Everything else is secondary.
2. The“ Two Wins” Rule: On the hardest days, don’ t try to conquer the world. Pick two things— just two— that would make the day a success. Maybe it’ s tagging 10 calves and sitting down for a 20-minute dinner with your kids. Once those are done, you’ ve won the day.
3. Check Your Ruck: In the Army, if your pack isn’ t adjusted correctly, even a light load will eventually break you. The same is true on the ranch. You are the most important piece of“ equipment” on your operation. If you are physically exhausted, mentally drained and spiritually empty, you aren’ t leading— you’ re just surviving. Resilience isn’ t about ignoring your own needs; it’ s about maintaining your gear so you can stay in the fight for the long haul.
The cattle community doesn’ t just need more producers; it needs more leaders who are mentally and physically tough enough to weather the storms. We don’ t just endure these heavy seasons— we grow through them. Keep your head up, focus on the mission, and remember, you were built for the weight you are carrying.
